Translating Democracy

Dieter Lesage

Precisely at the moment that the liberal-democratic mechanism of representation, if translated on a global scale, could stop or slow down desastrous capitalistic developments, liberal democracy seems to loose all credit among progressive people. There are indeed many good reasons why the mechanism of representative democracy has lost progressive credibility. But it is a strategic mistake to abandon representative democracy at a time when it could be seen as a way to break American hegemony within Empire. Therefore we have to translate democracy on another scale than that of the nation-state.
