Pelin Tan

1974 / Germany, based Istanbul.

Ph.D. candidate and Research assistant at the Institute of Social Sciences – History of Art, Architecture Faculty, Istanbul Technical University since 2001. Tan graduated in 1996 from Sociology – Ankara University and got her master degree in Art History from ITU, thesis “globalization and contemporary art after 1990s”. Tan was a DAAD granted Ph.D. candidate at Humboldt University (Berlin) and did teach at Berlin Technical University – History of Art on the “space politics” and contemporary art (2006-2007).

Tan is the co-editor and producer of a non-profit Istanbul based contemporary art magazine “Muhtelif” and  the Istanbul correspondence of Atlanta based art magazine “Artpapers”. As a writer she contributed books: self-service city: Istanbul, b-books; Kulturelle Topografien, Metzler; The [un]common place, Actar. TRACER 1-2, WdW; Felons by A.Phelan, FROM/TO by Karl-Heinz Klopf, Linz, editor of an upcoming publications "Public Turn in Contemporary Art"'(2007), and wrote for art and architecture journals such as: Bidoun, Untitled, Metropol M, IDEA, Springerin,  XXI architecture, Doxa, arkitera, Graz Architecture Magazine and several others.  2003-2004,  Invited curator at  Witte de With / Tent  Contemporary Art Institutions, Rotterdam, Tracer.  2006, curator of "Dwelling as a Negotiation" exhibition  in Istanbul.  Since 2003, director of "Heterotopia"  workshop in ITU Architecture Faculty.  2005, with M.Henrikkson, M.Hannula and V.Kortun the  “Lost in Translation”, urban workshop  9.International Istanbul Contemporary Art Biennale. 2006, with A. Vidokle, “Questioning Alternative Practices “ conference+workshop Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center 2006.

Works in collaboration with Istanbul based NGOs on cultural policy developtment. Lecture/conferences in Trier University-Art History, Düsseldorf Univ.-Cultural Studies Dept., Valand School of Art- IASPIS, Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Diyarbakır Contemporary Art Center, Karlsruhe Architecture Faculty, Weimar Univ.-Urban Studies  and several others institution. Member and in organization committee of International Association of Visual Sociology Association.
