Wie lassen sich die unberechenbaren und verwirrenden Folgen verschiedener Prozesse und Praxen der Kreolisierung in einem Ausstellungskontext zeigen? Durch welche Ausdrucksformen können koloniale Routen von Sklaverei und Zwangsarbeit, heutige Migrationsbewegungen, Macht- und Ausbeutungsverhältnisse sowie Widerstand und Kämpfe um Selbstbehauptung gefasst werden? Françoise Vergès versteht ihre Arbeit für ein "Museum der Gegenwart" auf Réunion als eine Infragestellung kolonialer Chronologien und eine Erkundung der Gegenwart. Ausgehend von einer Kritik des Archivs als koloniales Instrument diskutiert sie Möglichkeiten einer Öffnung des Museumsraumes für alternative Setzungen, für lokale und globale Transformationsprozesse in der Auseinandersetzung mit einer "Sammlung ohne Objekte".

How can the unpredictable, baffling, and unexpected consequences of the processes and practices of creolisation be made visible in an exhibition context? How can former routes of slavery and indentured labour, today's migrations, power relationships and exploitation be mapped concurrently with the resistance and struggles for self-determination? Françoise Vergès describes her work for a "Museum of the Present" on Réunion Island as consisting of challenging the colonial chronology and exploring the current situation. Departing from a critique of the archive as a colonial instrument, she discusses possibilities for opening up the museum to alternative approaches and local and global transformation processes in the context of a "collection without objects".

lehrt am Center for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths College/University of London und ist zusammen mit Carpanin Marimoutou Co-Direktorin der wissenschaftlichen Abteilung des in Entstehung befindlichen Museums "Maison des civilisations et de l’unité réunionnaise". Sie ist Politikwissenschafterlin (Ph.D. thesis "Monsters and Revolutionaries. Colonial Family Romance and Métissage"), hat als Filmemacherin und Künstlerin gearbeitet und war u.a. 2002 Beraterin für Plattform 3, “Créolité and Creolization”, bei der Documenta 11.

Araba Evelyn Johnston-Arthur

Cofounder and activist of Pamoja. Movement of the young African Diaspora in Austria. Lives and works in Vienna on Black emancipatory epistomology, historical and present day realities of the African Diaspora in Austria, Discourse analysis, Black politics of represention, institutionalized racism and antidiscrimination, Black empowerment, antiracist socialwork und pedagogy. Lectures at the University of Vienna, The Academy of Fine Arts (Institute for Secondary School Teaching Degress) and The college for Higher Education - Socialwork.
